Marvin Lurie

Rifle (2018)

I have a rifle.
Its name is, “Never Again.”
It's stowed away
in its locked case
hibernating.
It's from before
when nuns in the neighborhood school taught kids
Jews killed Christ.
They and their big brothers understood that was me.
From when neighbors marched with the Amerikadeutscher Volksbund.
They are marching again.
The rifle is restless.
It's a hunter.
It wants to lean near the front door
to keep watch for marchers.

Mr. Rogers said when bad things happen
look for the good people who come to help.
Me and Never Again,
we are the good people now.

The words "Never Again" were a response to the Holocaust. It was also a slogan of the Jewish Defense League.
