Marvin Lurie

My searches for the women I could have married
find no more entries.
Somewhere there is a daughter
who might have been mine,
who is probably a grandmother,
or great grandmother.
That's how young we all were.

I've lost families I've never had --
the arc of their fierce young lives,
the daily awareness of their presence,
how they got on.

The sky is growing light.
I can see bushes and trees in the garden.
I'm going out soon to mulch the flower beds.
