Telling Signs

Fall weekends
my dog and I escaped the city early
for fields and hedgerows.
I relive those sharp mornings,
the painted dawns,
walking through brush in boots,
the heft and balance of my shotgun,
the good shots and retrieves,
how we worked together,
telling signs back and forth in our own ways.

Retired from the field, we took long walks,
discovered new wilderness,
retrieved sticks in new waters,
explored overgrown trails.
Colors flowed from green to amber
to winter sere to green.
Walks became shorter
until she was content
with the living room rug and back yard as her whole world.
I think she too relived the beauty and perfection of those days
in twitching dreams.
