Deloach Family Cemetery, South Carolina

Owls proclaimed mastery of the night
in the woods and fields.
I walked from my deer blind
past where pale grave stones,
unseen in sunlit brush,
now rose opalescent in moonlight.
Chance or some design brought me as witness
to revive a forgotten name
on a rusted sign:

Deloach Family Cemetery,
at a corner between a slough and a soybean field
where there was no road, no home.
I considered pushing through the kudzu-tangled gate
to uncover names and dates.
An owl hooted warnings.
I walked on
while the moon still lit my path.
