A Tattered Coat Upon A Stick

"On its rounds the wind returns." Ecclesiastes: 1.6

Scarecrow's coat has no buttons.
It opens to the wind
shows he has no heart
only old clothes
that once warmed a living heart.
Scarecrow turns one way, then another,
with the ever turning wind,
dawn to dawn in every season
showing no heart to every direction.
One passing by may see his portion
in the open coat
worn in both gladness and sorrow
and see he is enmeshed in the net of time
and must do what he can.
For he cannot know when the sun, moon and stars
will go dark for him and the wind go quiet.
